Polyglass Achieves ISO 9001:2015 Certification

Polyglass U.S.A., Inc. has transitioned to ISO 9001:2015, an international quality management standard that recognizes an organization’s commitment to a culture of continuous improvement.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. Jan. 6, 2018—Polyglass U.S.A., Inc. announced today that it has achieved ISO 9001:2015 certification. This accomplishment validates Polyglass’ commitment to manufacturing quality roofing and waterproofing products, enhancing customer satisfaction, and improving business performance.

“We are proud to receive ISO 9001:2015 for all of our Polyglass locations,” said Polyglass CEO Natalino Zanchetta. “As a quality-focused company, implementing a Quality Management System is a natural step for Polyglass. It increases our reputation for quality products in the industry and builds trust and confidence in our brand.”

Certification to ISO 9001 requires an accredited registrar (third-party auditing organization) to thoroughly review the company’s policies, processes, and procedures to ensure that they are capable of consistently meeting customer, regulatory requirements and the intent of the ISO 9001:2015 standard.

The ISO 9001 standards are published by the International Organization for Standardization, an international agency composed of the national standards bodies of more than 160 countries. A new version of the ISO 9001 appears about every seven years to ensure organizations continue to adapt to the changing environment in which they operate. ISO 9001:2015 is the latest of the ISO 9001 international standards.

Growing Rooftop Communities

The rooftop is a common meeting place for seniors living at SHAG (Senior Housing Assistance Group) properties in the Pacific Northwest. SHAG—the largest provider of affordable homes in Washington State— designs its buildings with rooftop access to provide residents with ways to build community cohesion while enjoying the outdoors.

For the new five-story property in Lynnwood, Wash.—a metropolitan city located 16 miles north of Seattle—SHAG selected a vegetative or green roof.  The new home for more than 300 seniors features a 50,000-square-foot rooftop with areas for pets, barbeques and raised vegetative trays for cultivating gardens.  The multi-level roof also includes a furnished deck.

“Building owners are realizing that the roof can be more than a cover for their facilities and are choosing roofs that provides social, economic and environmental benefits,” said Dustin Kathol, a third-generation roofing contractor and owner of 3-D Roof Systems based in Edmonds, Wash.

Over the years, there has been a steady increase of vegetative roofs in the U.S. and Washington in contributing to the growth. Green Roofs, an organization that promotes and inspires earth friendly technology, reports that over 36 million square feet of vegetative roofs and walls were installed as of October 2017.  While initially more expensive to install than a standard roof, over time vegetative roofs can increase property values, extend the longevity of roofing materials, decrease life-cycle cost, and cool and insulate the building.

Many cities provide incentives to install vegetative roofs to help manage storm water runoff.  A leading cause for water pollution, storm water flows off solid surfaces and collects pollutants such as oil, pesticides, sediments, bacteria, and other chemicals, and then deposits them into waterways. With a vegetative roof in place, rainfall that is captured on the roof evaporates or is absorbed by plants.

3-D Roof Systems headed the project and partnered with roofing and waterproofing materials manufacturer, Polyglass U.S.A., Inc., to design the roof. Founded in the early 1950s by the Kathol family, 3-D Roof Systems is a skilled team of certified contractors. Because of their long-term relationships with suppliers, 3-D Roof Systems quickly mobilized resources to bring the roof to life.

“We have a legacy of commitment to our customers and have earned their trust over the past 60 years,” said Kathol. “Working closely with Polyglass allowed us to provide SHAG with timely information and options that met budget and aligned with their vision for the roof.”

Backed by a 30-year warranty, the three-ply modified bitumen system chosen provides the critical waterproofing needed for a vegetative roof assembly. At 500-mils thick, the system adds layers of defense for the roof and enables long-term performance. In comparison, singly ply membranes typically have a 60 mils total thickness.

Products include two layers of Polyglass’ Polyflex® Smooth APP (Atactic Polypropylene) modified bitumen membrane for the base and interply sheets. For the final layer, Polyflex® G White APP cap sheet was installed to provide resistance to punctures, tears, abrasion, foot traffic and the elements. Elastoflex® SA V—a high performing self-adhered membrane featuring Polyglass’ ADESO® Technology was used for the flashing details.

500-mils thick, multi-ply modified bitumen roof system provides waterproofing & long-term performance for new five-story senior living facility in Lynnwood, Wash.

3-D Roof Systems began the roof installation in October 2016, which according to the Seattle Times had record breaking rainfall.  But 3-D Roof Systems was prepared for the inclement weather. The team used a system of inflatable tenting adapted for use on the roof to work around the weather.  As they completed sections of the roof, the tent was moved to new areas that needed to be worked on.

With their lean approach to project management, 3-D Roof Systems completed the Lynnwood City Center Senior Living on time and within budget. 3-D Roof Systems focused on the needs of the customer, worked closely with suppliers to source quality solutions, and used innovative solutions to overcome installation challenges.

Polyglass 25th Year Logo

Polyglass is a leading manufacturer of modified bitumen roof membranes, elastomeric roof coatings and underlayments. Founded in the early 1950s by roofing contractors in northern Italy, Polyglass established its first manufacturing plant in the 1960s serving roofing contractors across Europe. The company grew organically and expanded operations into the United States in 1992 with its first location in Fernley, Nevada. By 2006, Polyglass had grown to three US facilities with the addition of plants in Pennsylvania and Florida.

In 2008, Polyglass  was acquired by Mapei, a global manufacturer of adhesives, sealants and construction materials for the building industry. Since the acquistion, Polyglass has added a manufacturing location in Arizona, with an additional facility in Texas slated to be operational at the end of 2017. Polyglass’state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities are ISO 9001:2008 certified and strategically located to serve its valuable customers.

Since developing its first compound formula decades ago, Polyglass has added hundreds of innovative products that extend the roof-life cycle, help manage building energy loads and enhance building aesthetics. With the launch of patented ADESO® Technology, Polyglass provided an easier, safer, and faster way to install modified bitumen membranes. As part of its commitment to customers, Polyglass offers continuing education through Polyschool®, a two-day comprehensive training program that teaches best practices in the installation of Polyglass’ commercial and residential products. Polyglass has also developed a robust customer loyalty program with its Club Premio program – rewarding its customers for their Polyglass product purchases.

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. Jan. 31, 2017–Polyglass U.S.A., Inc. in conjunction with the Jacob Companies is helping to rebuild communities in the Bahamas.  The island is recovering from the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew, a category four storm that caused damage to government buildings, homes, businesses, airport facilities and roads in early October 2016.

“Due to this powerful storm, we have witnessed utter devastation in some parts of the Bahamas,” said Hon. D. Shane Gibson, Minister of Labour and National Insurance for the Common Wealth of the Bahamas.

Hurricane Matthew brought intense rain and damaging winds, tearing off roofs, toppling trees and power lines.  Matthew was the first major hurricane to strike Nassau and New Providence, home to the bulk of the Bahamas’ population of 375,000, since 1929.

“Our hearts went out to the people of the Bahamas when we learned about the damages the country sustained,” stated CEO of Jacob Companies Don Perry.  “We responded by contacting our friends and business partners to see what we could do to assist and Polyglass responded with a generous donation of roofing materials.”

Polyglass donated 500,000 square feet of its self-adhered modified bitumen roof membrane to the cause. The roofing product is reinforced with polyester and features a granulated surface that provides a durable protective solution to the affected structures. The roof material used is ideal because the membrane features an aggressive adhesive on the bottom surface making the roof installation easier, safer and faster.

“The government and people of the Bahamas are grateful to Polyglass for its more than generous donation. This kind gesture will go a very long way in helping to restore the homes and lives of thousands of Bahamians affected by Hurricane Matthew,” said Minister Shane Gibson. “We also thank the Jacob Companies and NASCAR for enabling the outreach efforts and the Bahamas Tourist Office Florida Hurricane Relief Committee for their help with organizing the logistical process.”

“We are happy to help make a difference in the Bahamas as they recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew,” stated Polyglass CEO Natalino Zanchetta.  “Polyglass is committed to giving back to the community and is proud to partner with Jacob Companies on this worthwhile initiative.”

Polyglass’ Multi-ply Roof System Performs in Severe Weather

Weak roofing systems will fail in extreme weather; hailstones will pierce it, rainwater will get beneath it, strong winds will lift it, and extreme heat will expand and shift it.

The performance of a roof is linked to its design. From the manufacturing of the products to the system installation, roof performance depends on the quality of its components.

Before a Polyglass modified bitumen membrane is manufactured, the product goes through rigorous testing to ensure it can withstand virtually every weather condition. Polyglass’ modified bitumen membranes are either reinforced with fiberglass to provide dimensional stability or polyester to improve puncture resistance. Membranes that feature patent pending CURE Technology® incorporate ceramic microspheres, proprietary resins and UV stabilizers to the surface to enhance reflectivity, granule adhesion and stain resistance.

Building owners and facility managers cannot afford to install any roof system besides a modified bitumen multi-ply roof system.
