Polyglass Releases Time-Trial Videos Demonstrating Time and Labor Savings with Polyglass Products

Polyglass U.S.A., Inc., a leading manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing systems, recently conducted a series of time-trials comparing the installation times for various configurations of their products. These four time-trial videos demonstrate that by using either a full or hybrid self-adhered system, contractors can save time and money on the labor costs of installation. Self-adhered technology is not only a safer and cleaner installation but there are significant benefits for contractors and their team.

To conduct the time trials, Polyglass set up identical conditions for the roofing teams to apply a roofing system to a 1000-square-foot panel. The videos show the step-by-step process for each roofing installation in the time trial and offer side-by-side comparisons of the results.

Trial 1: Two-ply torch (with FASTLap®) vs. 2-ply ADESO® self-adhered membranes

The first time-trial involved applying a 2-ply torch-applied roofing system compared with a similar roofing system using ADESO self-adhered technology. At the conclusion of the trial, the ADESO self-adhered system required one less crew member and was installed in almost 2 hours less time than the torch-applied system, amounting to a labor savings of 50 percent. Check out the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MF8cCS3AOug

Trial 2: Two-ply torch (with FASTLap) vs. Stick 1 Torch 1

The second time-trial compared a 2-ply torch-applied roofing system with a Stick 1 Torch 1 roofing system—a hybrid application of ADESO self-adhered underlayment followed by a torch-applied top layer. The trial determined the Stick 1 Torch 1 system saved the five-person crew one hour and ten minutes of time, for a total labor savings of 30 percent.

Check out the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2CjNNEbomk

Trial 3: Stick 1 Torch 1 vs. 2-ply ADESO self-adhered membranes

For the third trial, Polyglass pitted its hybrid Stick 1 Torch 1 application against a 2-ply ADESO self-adhered roofing system. In this comparison, the fully self-adhered system required one less crew member and saved the team a total of 47 minutes in installation time.

Check out the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZ0YlVS_0xM

Trial 4: Two-ply torch (with FASTLap) vs. Velociflex System

The fourth time trial compared the 2-ply torch-applied system with the Polyglass Velociflex roofing system—a high wind resistant system combining mechanical fastening and torch application. The Velociflex system gives you a high-performance system in high wind zones while saving the contractor time and money. In the end, the Velociflex system saved the 5-member team about 30 percent in labor costs.

Check out the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDSNitUUWJw

Throughout all trials it was identified that the ADESO self-adhered systems, whether it is in a hybrid system or a full SA System, saved time in installation which will save money for the contractor in labor cost. The end result, Polyglass roofing systems are long-lasting durable roofing systems with superior weathering performance. Polyglass invites you to view the time trial videos at https://polyglass.us/videos/low-slope/.

Polyglass and D&D Roofing Collaborate for Shriner’s International Project

Polyglass and D&D Roofing Collaborate for Shriner’s International Project

Project provided multi-ply modified bitumen roofing for Shriner’s Kerack

Polyglass U.S.A., Inc., a leading manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing systems, teamed up with D&D Roofing, a roofing contractor in Nevada, to provide a new roofing system for a Shriner’s Kerack in Reno. Shriner’s International is a 501C organization consisting of a network of regional chapters, run primarily by volunteers, that offer support and services to those in need across the US and abroad.

For the Kerack Project, the Polyglass Special Projects team concluded that the facility needed far more than the project budget could support and decided it was critical to provide assistance for the complicated reroofing project. Polyglass offered to work with D&D Roofing on an entirely new roof design that would meet the Kerack’s needs. D&D Roofing came up with new roof design that included components to strengthen the building diaphragm. They chose a multi-ply modified bitumen roof system with exceptional performance and high puncture resistance, unlike the single-ply membrane previously under consideration.

After installing the insulation board, a layer of Polyglass’ SBS self-adhesive (SA) base membrane was installed, along with Elastoflex® SA Base , a high-performance polyester reinforcement. To add superior weathering and puncture resistance, the D&D Roofing crew installed an SBS granulated cap sheet with a high-performance reinforced polyester mat (Elastoflex® S6 G) by torching means, effectively fusing all layers of the assembly tightly as a monolithic layer resulting in 270 mils of membrane. The blended color added UV resistance and a visually attractive look to the completed roofing.

With Polyglass’ contribution by providing all the modified bitumen and related membrane accessories at no cost the Shriner’s for this project, the result was a much heavier-duty roofing system. It also allowed them to reroof the entire facility and make needed deck enhancements to the building.

As a result of this important project, this local Shriner’s facility can continue to provide critically needed meeting and transportation services for children and their families, giving them opportunities for no-cost medical care, and offer local residents in the Reno/Sparks area with a low-cost gathering place, all without the worry of a troublesome leaking roof.

Polyglass Announces Polystick® P High-Temperature Roof Underlayment

Polyglass Announces Polystick® P High-Temperature Roof Underlayment

Introducing Polystick P, a self-adhered waterproofing underlayment designed to resist temperatures up to 250°F.

Polyglass U.S.A. Inc., an industry-leading manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing systems, is pleased to announce the release of Polystick P, an advanced self-adhered roof underlayment specifically designed for metal roofs and other high-temperature applications.

Made from elastomeric modified asphalt, Polystick P can withstand temperatures up to 250 degrees Fahrenheit. It features a high tensile strength top surface containing a proprietary skid-resistant pattern for sure footing. The bottom surface consists of a high-temperature compound that is self-adhered for quick, accurate application.

When properly installed, Polystick P creates a watertight seam thanks to a rubberized asphalt bleedout along the edge, creating effective waterproofing against the elements. Each roll comes protected by siliconized split-release paper providing easy self-adhered installation, and the self-adhered compound easily forms a seal around nails. And because the underlayment is rated for exposure up to 180 days, contractors can use it confidently on works-in progress.

Specially designed for high-temperature applications, Polystick P is an ideal underlayment for metal roofs like steel and copper, as well as mechanically attached roof tiles and other roof coverings. It easily attaches to skylights, valleys and other flashing areas. Use it in confidence as its own underlayment or as part of a multiply underlayment system.

“The versatility of Polystick P for both residential and commercial applications is outstanding,“ said Tino De La Rosa, Pacific Northwest Regional Sales Manager for Polyglass.

Polyglass U.S.A., Inc., is happy to answer any questions about this exciting underlayment product. For more information about Polystick P, please visit polyglass.us/product/polystick-p.

Polyglass Announces Polystick XFR Self-Adhered Fire-Resistant Roof Underlayment

Polyglass Announces Polystick XFR Self-Adhered Fire-Resistant Roof Underlayment

Introducing Polystick XFR, a dual-purpose fire resistant and self-adhered waterproofing underlayment featuring Burn-Shield Technology™

Polyglass U.S.A., Inc., a leading manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing systems, is pleased to announce the release of Polystick XFR, an advanced dual-purpose fire-resistant and self-adhered waterproofing underlayment that provides superior fire resistance for combustible decks with metal roof coverings and other high-temperature applications.

Where other fire-rated underlayment products struggle to strike a balance between robust fire protection and reliable waterproofing, Polystick XFR successfully combines our ADESO® and Burn-ShieldTM technologies with the highest quality materials to yield a product that excels in both areas. This product achieves UL Class A fire ratings for combustible decks while also providing long-term superior weathering performance.

Utilizing ADESO Dual-Compound Self-Adhered Technology for fast, labor-saving application, Polystick XFR features an SBS (elastomeric) modified bitumen upper compound and an aggressive self-adhesive compound on the bottom. Fiberglass reinforcement provides additional strength and stability, and Polyglass’ own patent-pending Burn-Shield Technology provides superior resistance to flame spread. The end result is a penetration-resistant underlayment of unmatched quality rated to withstand temperatures up to 265 °F.

Because Polystick XFR is specifically designed for high-temperature applications, it is an ideal underlayment for metal roof covering systems like steel, copper and similar materials. It is also approved for use under asphalt shingles, mechanically attached tiles, and any other application where fire resistance is needed or desired. When used as a secondary layer above Polystick MTS PLUS, this product can be installed as part of a multi-ply underlayment system. And because Polystick XFR can be exposed for up to 180 days, contractors can use it with confidence on works-in-progress.

“I’m excited about Polystick XFR,” said Polyglass National Product Manager Marco Sieber, “because Polyglass is able to offer an extremely high-performance product from a fire plus water protection and labor savings perspective in a market with very few other good options for the contractor, specifier and building owner.”

Polyglass U.S.A., Inc., is available to answer any questions about this exciting new product. For specification sheets and more information about Polystick XFR and our other roofing and waterproofing products, please visit polyglass.us.

Polyglass Manufacturing Plant Leadership Protect Health and Safety of Employees & Community While Maintaining Production to Service Essential Business
Increased employee health & safety precautions enable continued production

Polyglass, a leading manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing membranes, recognizes the progressive actions that their manufacturing plants leadership and employees are taking to stay safe and healthy while continuing a regular production schedule. While the corporate and administrative departments are working from home, the employees at the plants are dedicated and working hard to keep the products moving in their new working environment. As an essential business, all five of the US plants are able remain open and supplying materials to service essential businesses because of the extreme precautions in ensuring sanitization, social distancing, and PPE for employees. “At Polyglass, we have two, equally important priorities in this time of crisis. The first is to ensure all of our employees, and thus their families and communities, remain safe and healthy,” said Matt Rupnick, Plant Manager at Polyglass. “The second is to continue production as usual, in order to ensure that our customers, especially essential businesses, can access our products in order to maintain the integrity of their building envelope.”

Polyglass manufacturing facilities have taken steps to maintain employee health and safety in this time far beyond the guidelines for social distancing outlined by the CDC. From installing additional handwashing stations and providing employees with PPE, to making hand sanitizer from existing isopropyl stocks and checking employee temperatures before entrance to facilities, Polyglass has implemented policies to protect employees. The company has also increased sanitizing procedures in all facilities, including daily sanitizing of high-touch areas and a weekly deep cleaning of all manufacturing environments on weekends.

“All of the extra measures we’ve undertaken mean increased safety and peace of mind for employees, partners, customers, and the families and communities we’re all a part of,” Troy Hanson, Corporate Environmental, Health and Safety Manager added. “By keeping one another safe, we’re also ensuring that our customers can effectively seal their roofs and waterproof their buildings to keep occupants safe as well.”

The company continues to adapt and update policies as new information comes to light about the COVID-19 pandemic. Polyglass’ manufacturing plant leadership plans to maintain stable production rates and while ensuring the utmost safety of employees and the community.

Remembering Polyglass Founder Romano Zanchetta

Remembering Polyglass Founder Romano Zanchetta

Roofing Industry Pioneer and Visionary

Romano Zanchetta, a founder of Polyglass, leaves behind a legacy of innovation to the roofing industry. With his spirit of entrepreneurship, focus on improving roofing products and equipment, and gifted talent for developing products to solve roofing challenges, he was truly an industry pioneer. He had a fierce love of family and treated Polyglass and its employees as an extension of that family. At 88, Romano lived to see his vision passed on to a new generation.

The early years

Romano Zanchetta was born in northeast Italy in 1932, part of a large farming family from the Treviso area, near Venice. As a teenager, he and his brothers Luigi and Antonio joined a stream of young Italians chasing greater economic opportunity by migrating to an area of Switzerland near the Italian border. He took  a job with a roofing contractor, eventually becoming an expert roofer. There he gained his first exposure to roofing products and systems manufactured in the United States and Europe.

Romano spent a decade in Switzerland, where he married and started a family that eventually grew to seven children. After a tragic natural disaster destroyed the area near his home village in Italy in 1963, Romano and his brothers returned to Italy to use his roofing skills to help rebuild. This disaster was the collapse of the Vajont Dam.which caused landslides and flooding,as well as resulted in more than 2000 deaths and destroyed five villages.

During the rebuilding era in the mid-1960s, Romano made use of an innovative new roofing product made by melding asphalt with Atactic PolyPropylene (APP). APP started its life as merely a waste product from the plastic manufacturing process. Polypropylene, first polymerized by Italian Nobel Prize winning chemist Giulio Natta and others, was the foundation of the huge new plastics industry, with products commercialized by Italian manufacturers.

Romano set out to use the new material for the massive job of rebuilding those towns lost to the floods. According to Romano’s son Natalino Zanchetta, now CEO of Polyglass, his father first heard of the marvelous properties of this so-called waste product from manufacturers in the Marghera petrochemical factories near Venice. “He got a hold of the material, experimented with it and started to meld the APP with the asphalt. He discovered the beauty of this type of injection into asphalt – and used his knowledge to form a roofing membrane with superior waterproofing properties.”

By 1967-68, Romano developed ways to use the new asphalt, searching for the best ways to laminate the product. According to family lore, Romano was struggling to find a way to make the material smooth, when his wife Elda told him to use the pasta maker to get the smoothness he needed. And the rest is history- a fitting connection to the birth of APP modified bitumen membranes!

Entrepreneurial instincts kick into high gear

Romano knew he had a winning idea and in 1968-1969 the brothers partnered with Boato International, now a global leader in fabricating plants for the production of modified bitumen membranes. Using equipment developed by Boato, Romano and his brothers founded Polyglass and installed the first production line in 1969 in the back yard behind Romano’s house in Ponte di Piave. Fast forward only a few years to 1972, when the brothers opened a true manufacturing facility in a new industrial area located in Ponte di Piave, in the province of Treviso. Focused on his pioneering vision to create new roofing products, Romano and his brother Luigi began producing products for the marketplace. At that point their other brother Antonio split off to focus solely on the roofing contracting business.

While partnering with Boato and exporting products and technology to the United States, Romano became convinced that the firm had to expand beyond Italy to the U.S. By the late 1970s into the early 1980s they had established a US Polyglass presence in Chicago, becoming active members of the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA). Building their first production line in Chicago in partnership with the American Roofing Corporation, Romano eventually hitched his wagon to the American dream and decided to move to the US permanently.

In 1992, Polyglass purchased a manufacturing facility in Fernley, Nevada, bringing their knowledge of building state-of-the-art manufacturing equipment to make top quality products. They expanded production, focusing on a host of APP modified bitumen membranes that took the industry by storm. By 1995, Romano and Luigi wanted to create a national footprint for the company, eventually building a second facility in Hazelton, Pennsylvania.

At the same time Polyglass continued to evolve the machinery technology in Italy. They eventually separated off from Boato to create their own in-house machinery capabilities to better control the direction of equipment innovations, upgrades, and protect the company’s intellectual property from spin offs and competition.

The birth of self-adhesive membranes

Romano had always been on the cutting edge of roofing products, continuously seeking practical solutions to roofing problems, ways to make them safer, and perform better. His vision – and skills as a product innovator – came to the forefront again in the early 1990s. That is when he took on the serious issue of US insurance companies attempting to reduce fires by limiting roofers’ use of torching to install roofing products.

Romano’s vision was to create a product that could be applied without torching. He began experimenting with the idea in 1994 at the Italian facility. He eventually came out with the first self-adhesive membrane in 1995-6, creating a new product category within the Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association (ARMA).

Taking a calculated risk, he decided to dedicate the new Hazelton, PA facility to producing the patented self-adhered ADESO® modified bitumen membrane technology. The risk was worth it, and the company became recognized worldwide for the product, which is now one of the fastest-growing market segments in the industry.

Unfortunately, the excitement of the new machinery and new product was overshadowed by a personal tragedy, when Romano’s brother and trusted partner Luigi died suddenly of a heart attack. Not long after, Romano made the decision to remain in Italy to handle family matters and oversee the business operations.

More product innovation in the face of hurricane damage

The company founder’s vision expanded in the early 2000s to accommodate a huge demand for new tile underlayment products. The products turned out to be ideal for Florida roofers rebuilding after the devastating hurricanes of 2004-2005. A new facility, located in Winter Haven, Florida, was quickly built to support the need for the product. By this point, the US branch of the company was run by Romano’s children while Romano focused on the business in Italy and Europe.

In 2008, Romano decided it was time for Polyglass to make way for a new family and he put the company up for sale. True to his nature, he held out for a company that would maintain the company name and vision and make sure all the employees were treated well. After conducting a rigorous due diligence of potential suitors, he selected the MAPEI Group, a global manufacturer of adhesives, sealants and chemical products for the building industry owned by the Squinzi family. MAPEI has continued with the Polyglass brand and followed the same commitment to company culture.

“With my father’s vision and teaching, Polyglass continues to create very strong products that solve problems,” said Natalino Zanchetta. “When I last met with my father over Christmas, he told me he was especially thrilled that his family is continuing with his vision of growth in the United States. He appreciated that the company was doing great and thanked his family for taking his company to a world-class level.”

Father, entrepreneur, and roofing industry pioneer, Romano Zanchetta was a giant in the modified bitumen field. He was a family man first and always and Polyglass was an extension of that family. Always focusing on helping others, creating jobs, and supporting his family, his legacy of innovation and important contributions to the roofing industry will live on.
