Press Release: Three Decades Strong. The Power of Innovation

Polyglass to celebrate 30 years of cutting-edge, quality product design for the U.S. building and waterproofing industries.

As Polyglass marks 30 years in the U.S. roofing industry, they look back at their modest beginnings to celebrate past achievements and share their exciting vision for the decade to come.

***

When brothers Luigi, Romano, and Antonio Zanchetta created their first modified bitumen compound formulation for roofing membranes in Italy in the 1960s, little could they have anticipated how significantly their product innovations would impact the roofing and waterproofing industries over the coming years.

From opening their first plant in Italy in 1972 to later business expansions into the U.S. and their acquisition by The Mapei Group in 2008, Polyglass continues to carve out its name as an industry leader and expert manufacturer of innovative and quality roofing and waterproofing technologies.

To this day, Polyglass remains a family business, with Natalino Zanchetta — the son of founder Romano Zanchetta — at the helm in his role as President/CEO.

On Polyglass’ successes over the last three decades, Zanchetta shared, “In thirty years, we innovated, we created a lot of products that are very, very good for the industry. The roofing industry is evolving; there are challenges every year, especially labor challenges, material challenges, and we as Polyglass are really trying to find the solutions through our people, through engaging our people, making them work together, and so far since day one [it has] been working very very well.”

Polyglass’ future is bright, with several new initiatives in the pipeline, including expansions at some of its state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in North America. With the support of Mapei’s extensive network of Research and Development partners, Polyglass now looks to expand its products and solutions to serve new markets in 2022, beginning with the Building Envelope industry.

Polyglass anticipates celebrating 30 exceptional years with customers and employees alike throughout the new year.

How Long Does Self-Adhered Roofing Last?

Self-adhered roofing is one of the easiest, safest, and most versatile types of roofing available on the market. But for all its advantages, how long does it last?

This post will compare the lifespan of self-adhered roofing with other types of roofing materials while explaining what this roofing type is, what it’s made from, and how it is installed.

Table of contents

What Is Self-Adhered Roofing?

Self-adhered (SA) roofing is a modified bitumen membrane that uses a powerful adhesive bottom layer to stick onto a roofing surface. Modified bitumen, derived from asphalt, is used as the basis of SA roofing membranes, augmented by other materials such as polymers. Two common types of modified bitumen membranes incorporate different materials to provide different properties, namely, atactic polypropylene (APP) and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) membranes.

APP membranes are enhanced with plastics to increase their rigidity, while SBS membranes feature a form of synthetic rubber that makes them elastomeric, increasing their flexibility.

Many roofing contractors use SA membranes due to their easy, quick, and safe installation process. Self-adhering roofing membranes are a cost-effective alternative compared to other roofing methods and are also incredibly versatile.

How Long Does Self-Adhered Roofing Last?

When choosing a roofing system, one of the main factors to consider will be the roof’s longevity. Different roofing materials all have different expected lifespans. However, it isn’t necessarily as clear-cut as that.

The realistic lifespan of a roof depends on several other factors. This includes:

  • The climate and weather conditions to which it will be exposed.
  • How well the roof system was installed.
  • How regularly the roof is maintained (roof inspections are recommended twice per annum) and the contractor used to do this.

The quality of the products and accessories – such as the roof underlayments, or roof membranes – and their related warranties, are also factors to consider when looking for a roof system with longevity.

SA modified bitumen roofing membranes come into their own for their easy installation process, which reduces the risk of poor-quality application that could cause problems later.

How to Extend the Life of a Roof System

In many cases, an aging roof can have its lifespan extended through the use of products such as roof coatings, which can be made from acrylic, silicone, or asphalt. Coatings are effectively applied onto the roof to repair wear and tear. As long as there are no glaring structural issues, a roof coating can add several years to a roof’s lifespan before a complete replacement is required.

Let’s take a look at a few common roofing types and their average expected lifespans.

1. Modified bitumen roofs

Most modified bitumen roofs, whether applied as SA membranes or heat-welded membranes, have an expected lifespan of between 20 and 30 years. With good maintenance, this can be extended even further.

Thankfully, modified bitumen roofs, especially self-adhered ones, are perhaps the easiest type of roof to keep in good condition. Polyglass self-adhering roofing membranes come with a 10–30 year warranty.

2. Asphalt roofs

Asphalt roofs are generally expected to last between 15 to 20 years. These roofs are easy to install and maintain and are known for their durability.

3. Metal roofs

Metal roofs will usually last for around 30 to 45 years. However, they are often expensive and can be adversely affected by heat and other weather conditions. They also require underlayment under the metal to provide vapor and water resistance.

4. PVC roofs

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) roofing systems are expected to survive for around 20 to 30 years. They are fairly durable but will often need repairs after about 10 years and don’t stand up well to cold conditions.

5. TPO single-ply roofs

TPO roofs are made from thermoplastic polyolefin and have a predicted lifespan of between 15 and 20 years. They are extremely susceptible to wear and tear because of their single-layer construction, reducing their realistic lifespan to around 10 years.

Polyglass Self-Adhered Membranes

Before self-adhering roofing emerged, modified bitumen roofs were often installed using potentially unsafe methods such as torch-down roofing. This all changed in the 1990s when Polyglass USA introduced the first-ever SA roofing products to the United States — made with patented ADESO® Self-Adhered Technology.

ADESO membranes have durable dual-compound APP or SBS surface layers on the weathering side and a powerful adhesive bottom layer for easy installation.

This technology is available throughout Polyglass’ line of membranes and underlayments, with a choice of different surface options to suit a variety of different roofing projects. ADESO Technology makes these membranes incredibly safe and easy to install, helping contractors save time and money. An ADESO roofing system gives your customers a durable roofing system that they can depend on.

There are several standout features built into all ADESO membranes. Polyglass’ innovative FASTLap® technology allows for quick and easy installation thanks to granule-free end laps, while SEALLap® Ultra creates strong monolithic watertight seals to prevent leaks and other water damage.

Self-Adhered Roofing Installation

Due to its powerful adhesive bottom layer, self-adhered roofing is quick and easy to install. It can be installed as a single or multi-ply system, on various surfaces, including concrete and wood, and can be fixed on top of roofing insulation.

Prev 1 of 1 Next

Installing a two-ply self-adhered membrane

Two-ply roofing membrane systems consist of a base sheet with a cap sheet on top. Before installation, the surface is cleaned thoroughly while the membrane rolls are left to acclimatize.

Once the surface is prepared, an SA base sheet, such as Polyglass’ Elastobase product, is cut into manageable lengths and applied to the roof. This is done by lining the strip up and removing the protective film covering the adhesive bottom layer. The membrane is then pressed into place.

Once a row of the membrane has been laid, pressure is applied in the form of a roller to help make sure that the base sheet fully adheres to the roof. The rest of the base sheet is laid in this way. Once the entire base sheet is down, a middle layer of roofing membrane like Polyglass’ Elastoflex SA V can be installed in the same way.

To finish the roof, a cap sheet with a granulated weathering surface, such as Polyglass’ Polyflex® SA P APP cap sheet, is applied in the same manner as the other layers.

Benefits of SA Membranes

Self-adhered roofing comes with a range of benefits that make it a great choice for most roofing projects. Let’s take a look at some of the advantages of installing this type of roofing system:

Durability

Roofing systems made with SA membranes are extremely durable and can stand up to a variety of weather conditions. Even with basic maintenance, SA membranes can last at least 20 to 30 years, and they are easy to repair should any problems occur. Their lifespan can be extended further through the use of products such as silicone coatings.

Ease of installation

This is the biggest advantage of choosing self-adhering membranes. Thanks to their powerful adhesive layers, SA roofing membranes are extremely quick and easy to install, especially those featuring Polyglass ADESO and FASTLap technologies. In a direct comparison, a Polyglass self-adhered roof can be installed two hours faster than the equivalent torch-down roof.

Safety

SA roofing membranes are also one of the safest types of roofs to install. They do not require the use of open flames like torch-down roofs do. This eliminates the significant risk of fire and means that no toxic fumes are produced during the installation process.

Versatility

Self-adhered membranes can be augmented with a range of extra features to adapt to specific roofing conditions. Some of Polyglass’ most versatile SA membranes include the highly reflective Polyfresko®G SA cap sheets and the Polyfresko® G SBS SA granulated cap sheets.

Weather protection

Roofing systems featuring self-adhering technology also stand up well against various weather conditions thanks to strong seals. Polyglass ADESO membranes feature SEALLap Ultra, designed to create powerful monolithic watertight seals along each roof seam.

Polyglass Congratulates Ramon Roofing for winning NRTCA’s 2020 Golden Hammer Award

Polyglass Congratulates Ramon Roofing for winning NRTCA’s 2020 Golden Hammer Award

2020 Street of Dreams Project featuring Polystick® MTS Plus

DEERFIELD BEACH, Fla. –June 9, 2021 Polyglass U.S.A., Inc. is excited to congratulate Ramon Roofing Inc. for earning a coveted 2020 Golden Hammer Award from the North Texas Roofing Contractors Association (NTRCA) for Best Residential Metal Roof. With locations in Austin and Fort Worth, TX, Ramon Roofing has been one of the go-to full-service roofing companies in the State of Texas for more than 25 years.

When Ramon Roofing recently installed a new 24-gauge standing seam metal roof system for Fort Worth, Texas Magazine’s 2020 Street of Dreams project, their underlayment of choice was the self-adhered Polyglass’ Polystick® MTS Plus.

Project Needs and Challenges

This roofing project involved installing a 9500-square-foot standing seam metal roof on a sprawling new construction home in Southlake TX. This project was particularly complex because the roof was cut up into several sections with multiple pitches.

Given the hot summers typical of the Texas climate, Ramon Roofing also knew they needed a high-quality underlayment that was specifically designed to withstand the high temperatures the metal roof would undoubtedly experience.

To meet the challenges of this project, Ramon Roofing chose Polystick MTS PLUS, a self-adhered waterproofing underlayment specifically designed for high-temperature applications such as metal roofing systems.

More on Polyglass MTS Plus

Polystick MTS PLUS provided a perfect solution because its slip-resistant film makes it ideal for providing traction on roofing systems with multiple slopes and pitches — plus it can remain exposed for up to 180 days, giving the roofers time to give the roof the attention it deserves.

Known for its high tensile strength and thermal stability, Polystick MTS PLUS is also rated to withstand temperatures up to 265°F, making it an excellent choice for the warm Texas climate. Additionally, Polystick MTS PLUS also features our patented ADESO® Self-Adhered Technology, a dual-compound manufacturing process with a robust self-adhesive applied to the bottom surface of the membrane with a split-release film for incredibly easy application.

Polyglass congratulates Ramon Roofing for winning NRTCA’s 2020 Golden Hammer Award for this amazing roofing system, and we are proud to have contributed to their success.

Giving Back: Polyglass Partners with Zenith Roofing to Help Ronald McDonald House of Ft. Worth, TX

Polyglass U.S.A., Inc., a manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing systems, recently had the opportunity to team up with Zenith Roofing Services, LLC to provide a much-needed update to the roofing system for Ronald McDonald House of Fort Worth, TX (RMDHFW). Zenith Roofing provided the labor and expertise to complete a full reroofing of the facility; Polyglass donated the roofing products needed to complete the project.

The Ronald McDonald House project is the latest charity project in an ongoing partnership between Zenith Roofing and Polyglass. The two companies have a mutually beneficial business relationship, but they have also found a common kinship in giving back, which is a key core value of both companies. As a result, Polyglass and Zenith collaborate regularly on numerous projects that give back to the community.

Zenith has supported RMDHFW for many years. As Zenith’s founder Allan Rodger explains, “as long as we’re in business, Zenith will do the Christmas decorations for RMDHFW and the families they support.”

When Zenith approached Polyglass to help with this project, it presented a unique opportunity for the Zenith family and Polyglass family to combine forces to help an organization dedicated to supporting other families.

“Zenith has always supported Polyglass products for their ‘tried and true’ manufacturing — and their quality of products and people,” says Blaine Sibby, Zenith’s Director of Business Development.

The Polyglass team was thrilled to contribute, and it carried a special sense of meaning for Chris Martinez and Dylan Homa, two Polyglass representatives who participated in the RMHFW project on-site.

“It’s a crazy time for us now in 2020, but these families who are going through this, it’s a crazy time for them through all this hardship,” says Martinez. “Our company talks a lot about family and family values…Giving back has always been a part of our organization, and for Dylan and I to be here to be able to give back to something in our own community…that makes it special for us.

“We’d like to thank Zenith for allowing us to be part of this,” Martinez continues. “And for Ronald McDonald House, we’d like to thank them for doing what they do, with or without us, because they’re going to be here every day no matter what.”

Polyglass Donates Roof Membranes for Pet Rescue Reroofing Project in South Florida

Polyglass U.S.A., Inc. worked alongside contractor Perkins Roofing and other partners to refurbish the damaged roof of Abandoned Pet Rescue in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

One of South Florida’s biggest no-kill animal shelters, Abandoned Pet Rescue had been in dire need of a new roof. The not-for-profit organization had been fundraising for the project when Perkins Roofing donated to the charity. Volunteer Larry Wallenstein then approached the contractor about estimating the cost of the new roof. Perkins Roofing worked with John Massengill, one of Polyglass’ Sales Agents of Building Envelope Associates, to coordinate the various donations.

“Tim Kanak at Perkins Roofing called me to tell me about the project. He informed me that the roof was leaking badly and desperately needed to be replaced,” Massengill said. “He asked if I could rally some of the manufacturers for participation in the project and I told him that I would.”

As a premier manufacturer of roofing membranes, Polyglass was happy to donate more than 100 rolls of Elastoflex SA V FR elastomeric SBS membranes and Polyflex SA P granulated APP cap sheets. Both of these products feature Polyglass’s patented ADESO Self-Adhered Technology, which eliminated the need for hot torch application. This allowed Perkins Roofing to install the new roof with minimal disturbance to hundreds of the shelter’s animal residents. Polyglass also donated buckets of PG 500 flashing cement for use during the project. Other donors provided adhesives, insulation, and logistical assistance.

The shelter’s leaking roof covered 6,200 sq ft. A combination of old gypsum and metal panels made up 5,000 sq ft of the surface. The remaining 1,200 sq ft was made from wood that had been infested with termites. The project took two weeks and involved extensive work. Perkins Roofing removed the damaged layers and installed Polyglass’ Elastoflex membranes and Polyflex cap sheets. APR now has a stunning new roof protected by Polyglass’s durable membranes. The roofing is safeguarded by Polyglass’s 20-year Quantum NDL warranty to give the charity peace of mind for the future.

Polyglass is proud to have been involved with this worthwhile project. Assisting their valued contractors and supporting hard-working charities is important to Polyglass’s ethos.

Whether you’re considering adopting an animal or simply looking to donate, help Polyglass support this cause by visiting the APR website (https://abandonedpetrescue.org/).

Polyglass Roof Coatings Stand Up to the Test for a Commercial Project in Southern California

Lareta, LLC, needed a roof restoration for their headquarters in Pomona, CA so they reached out to their contractor of choice, C.I. Services. Over the years C.I. Services gained the reputation as an industry leading surface support company for their high-quality commercial roofing installation, maintenance, and repair services.

To ensure a quality roof restoration to an aging PVC roof – 500 squares total, C.I. Services turned to silicone roof coatings from Polyglass U.S.A., Inc., an industry-leading manufacturer of roofing and waterproofing systems, to get the job done. To meet the requirements of a 15-year warranty, C.I. Services chose to install PolyBrite 98 Primer and PolyBrite 90.1 Silicone at a rate of two gallons per square foot. Despite their confidence in Polyglass products, the contractors wanted to be doubly certain of the results, which is why they made sure to do a field adhesion test.

“This was the first-ever Polyglass project installed over worn PVC using the 98 Primer,” says C.I. Services General Manager Marcus Clinco. “Polyglass rep Dan Gentile came out and did pull tests, and we even cut out a sample of the old roof membrane and gave it to him so he could send it back to Florida for further testing.”

In the end, the Polyglass products stood up to the test. “The customer was very happy with the final product,” says Clinco.

C.I. Services and other industry-leading contractors choose Polyglass roofing products for their quality and reliability, as well as outstanding technical support and warranty coverage. With decades of proven experience and a commitment to innovation, Polyglass has developed a line of trusted roofing systems and products that address a wide range of commercial roofing challenges.

  • PolyBrite 90.1 Silicone Roof Coating– a premium grade liquid-applied silicone coating that provides outstanding weathering and fungal resistance while also offering ultraviolet protection for an energy-saving “cool roof” effect.
